Atari User Guide Markdown Project
One-sentence summary:
Editing and rewrite sample that applies technical writing principles and Markdown to improve an Atari user guide for modern readers inheriting legacy computer hardware.
Overview
This project revises an existing user guide for an Atari home computer system and related peripherals using technical writing and editing principles. The guide was rewritten to provide clearer step-by-step instructions for hardware setup, basic operating system tasks, and troubleshooting, while making aging technology more accessible to readers familiar with modern computers. It also served as a practical project for learning and applying Markdown in a documentation context.
Audience
- People inheriting an Atari computer system and related materials
- Readers familiar with modern computers but not legacy systems
- Hiring managers and portfolio reviewers evaluating editing and rewrite work
Documentation Goal
The goal of this project was to transform an earlier, non-technical draft into a more usable, structured, and task-oriented guide. The documentation helps readers understand how to set up and use older computer hardware while reducing confusion around outdated terminology, media formats, and device behavior.

Challenges / Writing Considerations
- A key challenge in this project was rewriting existing content while learning Markdown.
- The guide also needed to support users who may not understand older computing concepts such as cassette-based storage, floppy disks, drive lettering, and hardware-specific device behavior.
- Another consideration was deciding when to use supplemental images to support setup and orientation without allowing visuals to replace clear written instructions. The revision work focused on replacing overly wordy, loosely structured content with concise, organized sections and clearer explanations of unfamiliar terms.
Deliverables
- Revised Atari user guide in Markdown
- Step-by-step setup instructions
- Basic OS command guidance
- Troubleshooting content
- Before-and-after editing comparison
Outcome / Why It Matters
This sample demonstrates how editing and rewriting can significantly improve the usability of existing documentation. It shows my ability to restructure content, reduce unnecessary background detail, clarify terminology, and create reader-focused documentation for a niche technical subject. It also reflects my ability to learn new documentation tools while applying core technical communication principles.
